Tipping in Paris

Tipping in Paris - Guide of Paris

By law, a 15% gratuity is always included in cafes and restaurants in France. This is required by French law as tips are assessed for taxation purposes. No matter what anyone says, a service charge or tip is always included.

A small extra tip is appreciated when tipping in Paris, but not necessary. Only leave an extra tip if you were satisfied with your service. The guide of Paris states that unlike the automatic 15%, the small extra tips go straight to your waiter instead of collected and divided among all waiters at the end of the day or directly to the owner.

Do not over tip, as that is considered to be vulgar according to the guide of Paris. People normally do not leave more than 5% when tipping in Paris unless they are at a very fancy restaurant.

Extra tips may range from 1-5 Euros for a lunch or dinner. If you have a drink, people often leave the change (coins). For a taxi driver, tipping in Paris is, again, not required; 5 to 10% is generous.

Traditionally, the usherette at the Opera house is tipped a couple of Euros. You may give your hotel porter one Euro per bag, if you wish.

The guide of Paris states that the ladies that take your coats in a lobby are typically given one or two Euros for every large item when you come back to pick up your belongings. A museum guide might get one or two Euros after the tour.
